What is Legionella?

Legionella is a bacteria that causes Legionnaires' disease - a severe form of pneumonia - lung inflammation usually caused by infection.

People can contract Legionnaires' disease when they breathe in small droplets of water in the air that contain the bacteria. Symptoms include; high fever, chills, coughing, head and muscle aches.

The bacterium Legionella pneumophila and related bacteria are common in natural water sources such as rivers, lakes and reservoirs but may also be found in purpose-built water systems such as cooling towers, evaporative condensers, hot and cold water systems and spa pools.

Legionnaires' disease requires treatment with antibiotics and most cases of this illness can be treated successfully. Healthy people usually get better after being sick with Legionnaires' disease, but they often need care in the hospital. Legionnaires’ disease can however be a potentially fatal form of pneumonia and everyone is susceptible to infection. Some people are at higher risk, including:

  • People over 45 years of age

  • Smokers and heavy drinkers

  • People suffering from chronic respiratory or kidney disease

  • Anyone with an impaired immune system

Legionella are relatively resistant to standard water disinfection procedures and, can occur in potable water. These bacteria have been found in water distribution systems of hospitals, hotels, clubs, public buildings, homes, and factories.

Controlling the Risk of Legionella

Firstly, you can reduce the risk of Legionella by having a Legionella risk assessment conducted on your property. This will identify the measures required to ensure your water systems are not contaminated. These steps could include descaling shower heads, temperature checks, tank cleans or water sampling.

All Legionella risk assessments and treatments should be carried out by experienced professionals who are highly trained in the handling and collection of water samples and the processes following a positive result.

It is important to control the risks of Legionella by introducing adequate measures, all of which Complete London Maintenance can assist with.
